Rendang's origins | Indonesian foods

RENDANG

Rendang (Minang language: Randang) is one of the traditional Minangkabau dishes that uses coconut meat and coconut milk as the main ingredients with rich spices. This spicy cuisine is loved by all people, and can be found in all Padang restaurants in Indonesia, Malaysia, or in other countries. This dish is sometimes better known as Rendang Padang, even though rendang is a typical Minang cuisine in general.

     The origin of rendang is traced from Sumatra, especially the Minangkabau. For the Minang people, rendang has been around for a long time and has become a traditional cuisine that is served in various traditional events and daily meals. As a traditional cuisine, rendang is thought to have been born since the Minang people held their first traditional event. Then the art of cooking developed into other regions of Malay culture; starting from Mandailing, Riau, Jambi, to the other country in Negeri Sembilan which is inhabited by many Minangkabau migrants. Because that is widely known as rendang in Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula.

Historian of Andalas University Prof. Gusti Asnan suspected that rendang had become a widespread dish since the Minang people began to wander and sailed to Malacca to trade in the early 16th century. "Because the trip over the river and takes a long time, rendang may be the right choice at the time as a provision." This is because dry rendang is very durable, can be stored for months, so it is right to be used when traveling or on a commercial trip.



Rendang is also referred to in classical Malay literature as Hikayat Amir Hamzah which proves that rendang has been known in the art of Malay cuisine since the 1550s (mid 16th century).

 Rendang is increasingly famous and widely spread far beyond its original territory thanks to the culture of migrating Minangkabau tribes.
